We would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of the individuals who studied and/or volunteered with us this year. You have all done tremendous work. Because of you El Nahual was able to purchase land to expand our programs through the (near-completed!) construction of our new community center and celebrate the fifth anniversary of Manos de Colores, all while continuing to provide children and adults in Pacajá with free and creative education in English, art, Spanish, mathematics, cooking, and so much more!
Some of the highlights of volunteer work this year included the designing and writing of a solid, 10-unit English curriculum for Manos de Colores which will be put into use when school resumes in mid-January; planning and carrying out a huge cultural exchange event honoring the academic and civic achievements of primary school-aged girls (¨Niñas Valores¨) which was attended by what appeared to be two-thirds of Xela; creating a stop-motion animated video about picking up trash with MDC-El Nahual, and pulling off big fundraising events like our Jamaican Beach Party at La Parranda in August! Others showed up to volunteer every day at our construction site, in our organic community garden, Telesecundaria, El Nahual, or sweated up the hills during the bike rides to La Cuchilla and Canton Candelaria. Still others continued to help support the work of El Nahual following their time at the center through publicizing on their university campuses, in their hometowns or during the remainder of their travels throughout Central America, designing our new website (www.elnahual.org, thanks Ethan!), and contributing to long-term sustainability through financial and material donations.
A big thank you to all the coordinators this year as well, all of whom donated three or more months of their time to volunteer for a cash-strapped NGO.
