The Quetzaltenango public schools are back in session, and this week we´ve returned to our regularly scheduled programming along with a few new schools!
Llano del Pinal is the village at the base of Volcan Santa Maria, about 2 kilometers from El Nahual. For a couple of months now the school administrators, after hearing about our volunteer projects and Manos de Colores, have been asking us to send volunteer teachers to their primary school. Today was the first day of classes, where the kids made name tags and established their ground rules for the year. It´s an easy transition into the curriculum, because next week they´ll be getting TESTED on all the English they know! (shhhhh, don´t tell them).
Tomorrow we´re also starting Manos de Colores at another high school, San Jose la Viña, here in Xela. So if you are interested in our volunteer projects but would rather work with teenagers—drop us an email at manosdecolores@gmail.com and let us know when you´re available!
Our other locations, La Cuchilla (primary school) and Telesecundaria (high school), are moving forward—now in the 4th year of Manos de Colores programming at each of these schools. Wow! And of course, our flagship Manos de Colores program is taking place every day from 3-5pm at our community center in Pacajá.
We´re excited for the new school year and looking forward to working with some new faces and new energy in 2010!
