Growing Green....

Last week ended like many others, as the students, volunteers, and teachers came together for our weekly themed Community Lunch. This week however, the theme was ¨green food¨ to mark the beginning of El Nahual´s commitment to ¨going green.¨ We all enjoyed broccoli quiche, cucumber salad, and pasta pesto, as we looked forward to a fresh start.

Later, this week began with scattered showers and bright sunshine, fortunately coercing our organic garden to break through the earth, leaving the ground scattered with a thin layer of vibrant green. As the showers continue we are implementing construction of a way to recycle the rain water and use it when needed for our garden and landscape. In addition to the usual bins for recycled paper and plastic, El Nahual is implementing a Green Week for the kids as well by providing the kids with instruction on the importance of recycling, picking up trash, and reinventing new ways to use old things. One of our volunteers helped the kids create recycled rainbows by using bits of plastic and old paper to create a piece of art, all while learning the colors of course!

Next week will continue with more of the same instruction as we both learn and teach new ways to protect and improve our own backyard. Maybe our next lunch will come from our very own garden!
