Earth Day was on the 22nd of April. Remembering this we held a Semana Verde (Green Week) last week at El Nahual. We started on Monday with a general introduction to the topic spiced with short movies and a Q&A session with the kids. When they started to understand the concept they were very keen to tell us everything they knew about the topic so far. Then for our art project we painted big Earth posters. On Tuesday we talked about the garbage problem (the biggest environmental problem in Guatemala) and collected the garbage around the school. Of course we classified them upon the material: paper, plastic bottles, glass, and metal. The gloves we used for picking up trash were some sizes too big for our little ones, but they still had so much fun in collecting. :) On Wednesday we painted textile bags, and discussed how poisonous plastic bags are and that they contaminate the soil for hundreds of years. On Thursday we all walked to the recycling place to take a tour and drop off our garbage from Tuesday (paper, plastic bottles, glass bottles and cans) On Friday we planted beans, watched a presentation about animals in danger, and freed the plants in our courtyard from the stones. To complete the week, on Saturday we conducted teamwork exercises with the adults and made “to do” plans regarding how each one can start from today on to live a more environmentally friendly life.
So we have grown green. :)
